Alex Model Sheet by Robo-Shark Alex Model Sheet by Robo-Shark
This is a reference for my OC contest, where you can win custom illustrations or plush toys! Go check my journal for info if you'd like to enter!

EDIT: Changed the placement of the strap for the goggles on the turnaround! Thanks a bunch for all the suggestions so far, this was a quick fix I could do in a few minutes before getting back to sketchbook work. Hopefully I will have time to redo the whole sheet and deal with the other issues another time.

Newer Alex model sheet! This one isn't a great ref for her jacket, since I'm animating her without it, but the older one works for that. The old one is here: [link]

As a reference for the contest (ffff GO ENTER!!), for a 2D animation I'm working on, and as additional reference for a friend who is creating 3D models of Rafe and Al C:

I decided to leave this one in sketchy mode so the shape breakdowns are easy to see, and because cleaning it up takes forever - don't have time.

Alex is my original character, part of a comic called Mechanima.

Some additional notes for Luke on materials:
-T-shirt is usually tucked into pants
-Black leather belt, metal buckle
-Thick knitted wool scarf, similar to Harry Potter
-Canvas high-top shoes with rubber toe and soles
-Yellow fabric hair ties
-Khaki canvas shorts
-Cotton t-shirt
-Puffy cloth bomber jacket with short pile off-white/beige fur collar
-Fingerless gloves, worn tan leather
-Brass goggles, worn/scuffed look - grayish green tinted glass lenses, leather strap with metal buckle

Mechanima Jay Miller.

I did something like this once, but then ended up getting rid of it because I had no use for the character in the end. That was so long ago I'm not sure I even remember the character...I think it was the one where I got my old username from...Aki Myra. She was a cat girl. I made her in my weeaboo stage, so it's no wonder I got rid of her. xD
More to the point LOOK AT THAT ADORABLENESS HNGGGGG
I'm sorry but Alex has to be my favorite. She's so cute and, well, she makes me think of me when I was around her age. I wasn't quite into mechanics, but I was into architecture and loved building things.
And we were both kinda excluded from the rest of the crowd. But that's another story.
BASICALLY SHE'S AN ADORABLE BALL OF PERFECTION

Aw, I had a few I ditched from those years...they weren't in a weeaboo stage exactly, but they were really...flashy and screamed "teen angst" hahah. I guess Rafe did too, back in those days, aaah the fishnets he wore OH NO. XD I had to make this one to do animations of her, it really needs a revamp too.

Ahh thank you, I'm really glad you can relate to her! That feeling of being excluded can be tough to cope with, I hope things are better for you now?

Oh man, sounds intense D:
And he wore fishnets? I'm not sure whether to be afraid or excited x'D
Aww, well I still think it looks nice! :)

You're welcome C: She's such an adorable kid  And yeah, things are better for me now. I've dealt with it most of my life, but once I hit 9th grade it started to lighten up. It still kinda messed me up a bit though. I'm always worried people are upset with me or think I'm dumb or don't like me etc. and I do all I can to make people happy.
It's a gift. And a curse.

Ahahah since he and I are very connected I guess he sorta went through my goth phase too, it was ridiculous :V Thank you!

I know the feeling of being worried that others are seeing you as dumb or a burden or anything else, it's tough to get past it when you've been treated badly for a good while, and it's hard to trust others again too. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about :)

Ah, that makes sense! :D And define ridiculous. xD

Oh yeah. It's fine for the most part, people actually like me now (kinda), but it still lingers in the back of my mind. I'm always paranoid that I'm doing something wrong or making someone upset or something, and I don't want that. I just want to make people happy ;;

I can relate, though i don't have tons of characters (i only have one), i do like to make my characters simple to draw instead of over complicating them. lol

I absolutely adore this character  she is so adorable and I love how you drew her facial expressions! :D

I have some critique for the turnaround.
The front and 3/4 front drawings are very good. The side drawing looks like it has a different placement of the arms than the others. All of them look like the arms are at her sides, but the side drawing has her arms placed behind her. The back drawing has an awkward placement of the shoulders. Try looking at some reference images to get it right.

Try to make the placement of the goggles more consistent- right now you've got them always facing away from the camera, but according to the front drawing, one lens should be facing the camera in the 3/4 front and side drawings. I've also got a character who wears goggles, and I know it's really hard to construct the cylinders correctly. What I did was I made a 3D model of her head and I turn it in space and use it for reference. The goggles look like they're just sitting on her head and would slip off if she made any quick movement, so perhaps the strap should go underneath her pigtails.

The placement of the shoes in the back drawing is incorrect; the heals should be closest to the camera and the toes going back in space. It looks like she's twisting her legs until her toes face us instead of standing normally with her toes facing forward, as she is in the other drawings.

Also something to keep in mind: Most character turnarounds have 5 images: front, 3/4 front, side, 3/4 back, and back. So it would be good to add a 3/4 back drawing to your turnaround.

That's all I've got. As I said, I love this character to death and I hope to see more of her in the future and added you to my watch list. :D

Thank you so much for the kind words and all of the advice!

I agree, the profile view is the weakest in the turnaround and I spent the least amount of time on it, along with the first drawing where she is wearing her jacket. I spent the most time on the front and 3/4 views and it shows that I slacked on the others due to time constraints. I hope on my next model sheet I can spend 3-5 minutes per drawing and make them more accurate!

I didn't even notice the goggle issues, thank you! I've always struggled with the strap too, putting it below the pigtails should hopefully solve that problem. I would love to make a 3D model if I have time next year or something! I've sculpted her but my sculpture is also unfinished, always running out of time for things, argh.

Thanks again, at our school we don't do the 3/4 back view for our model sheets but I plan to do them for my personal projects! This is also missing several action poses to show the character in motion, and I need to do those sometime after I've completed all my other work. Adding you to my watch as well, what college are you attending?

Yes she did! I wanted to emphasize the cuteness, the small head really bothered me on the older one. The proportions here are more childish and she fits in Rafe's arms better, hahah! I've never had a consistent style but I am trying to make her more simple and to give her a more solid silhouette compared to before.

Okay!

Looking at this, I notice the distance between her eyes varies from drawing to drawing, especially on the turnaround.

The turnaround doesn't really line up, the leftmost drawing without the jacket is the most off, her whole head is a lot higher up and her eyes are closer together than in the other views (I personally prefer the eyes in that view than the wider-spaced ones though, for what it's worth).
Here's a visual example of how the turnaround doesn't line up: [link]
The mouth is a really tricky area too. I don't quite know how the slanted mouth should look from the various angles, but there's something not quite right about it. I'd make a little model and look at it from different angles.

Oh man that's so bizarre, considering I used a lightboard to trace the placement for every drawing D: I noticed the eye issue though too, thanks for pointing out how much they vary. I like the eyes spaced closer together too, I will have to make sure that's consistent when I'm animating it. Seeing those guides really shows how off it is, I'm a bit embarrassed I didn't check it in Photoshop considering it's a lot more accurate than a lightboard or ruler. Thank you for the screencap pointing out how varied it is, that helps a lot.

Yeah the slanted mouth doesn't work very well in the profile view in particular, if I had time to model it I would to see how it looks when turned.

Thanks a lot for the input!

Not a problem! I had issues getting my latest turnaround project to line up too, even though I used tracing paper to help line up the features. Glad to know I'm not the only one. xD Had to do a bit of Photoshop work, I guess tracing is an imperfect method.

Lol glad it isn't just me then too! Consistency is NOT my strength, need to work on it a lot more. Photoshop is a great way to start since like you said, tracing isn't the most accurate.
